Early Years Unit

Columbia School has an integrated provision for the Early Years Foundation Stage within its Early Years Unit. We have one Nursery Class and two Reception Classes.

Each reception class has 30 full-time children and they have a class teacher and a nursery nurse allocated to each class. The nursery class has a mixture of children who attend for the morning sessions or the afternoon sessions and some children who are in the nursery full-time.  Nursery classes have a class teacher and a nursery nurse in each room.

Years 1 – 6

Columbia school has two forms of entry in Years 1-6. This means that each year group has 60 children divided into 2 classes per year. The classes are named after precious materials: Coral, Turquoise, Ebony, Bronze, Silver, Sapphire, Ruby, Amethyst, Jade, Amber, Emerald and Pearl. Children are allocated to a class in Year 1 and generally stay in the same class as they move through the school until Year 6. Each class has their own classroom and class teacher who is supported by some time from a teaching assistant and some time from another qualified support teacher or phase leader.
